A documented collectible connected with the Tomorrowland electronic music festival.

Created for Global Journey travellers during the long-awaited return of Tomorrowland Belgium in 2022, the journal was designed as both a practical travel companion and a keepsake in which the People of Tomorrow could preserve memories from their journey.

Description

The Tomorrowland Global Journey Travel Journal 2022 is one of the more distinctive souvenirs connected to Tomorrowland’s official Global Journey travel experience. Created for Global Journey travellers during the long-awaited return of Tomorrowland Belgium in 2022, the journal was designed as both a practical travel companion and a keepsake in which the People of Tomorrow could preserve memories from their journey.

The 2022 edition has particular historical significance. After the cancellations of the Belgian festival in 2020 and 2021, Tomorrowland finally returned to De Schorre in Boom in July 2022. Exceptionally, the festival was organised across three weekends, with the 16th edition built around The Reflection of Love theme. Global Journey played a major role in that comeback: Tomorrowland later reported that more than 46,000 people travelled through Global Journey in 2022, which it described as its largest festival travel undertaking at the time.

A journal made for the journey

Rather than being a standard promotional notebook, the 2022 Travel Journal was conceived around the idea of exploration. Its dark forest-green exterior is richly decorated with metallic gold illustrations inspired by old maps, celestial charts and vintage travel journals. A globe and compass-like emblem occupies the centre of the front cover, surrounded by radiating lines, stars, hot-air balloons, celestial bodies and fantastical figures travelling through the sky.

The words “Global Journey”, “Travel Journal” and “Tomorrowland” are integrated into the elaborate gold artwork, immediately identifying the journal as an object belonging to the Tomorrowland travel experience.

The same visual language continues across the back cover, where the familiar Tomorrowland butterfly emblem becomes the centre of another celestial composition. Together, the front and back give the journal the appearance of an imaginary explorer's atlas rather than conventional festival merchandise.

Design details

Several physical details make the journal especially elaborate:

  • Dark green travel-journal cover with an aged, explorer-inspired appearance
  • Extensive metallic gold-foil artwork across the front and back
  • Celestial map graphics featuring stars, the sun, moon and directional markings
  • Illustrations of hot-air balloons and travelling figures
  • Tomorrowland and Global Journey symbols incorporated throughout the artwork
  • Elastic closure system wrapping around the journal
  • Green wraparound tab that helps secure the journal when closed
  • Brown cord with an antique-brass-coloured globe/compass charm
  • Removable or replaceable notebook-style interior
  • Lined, vintage-toned writing pages
  • Integrated pen holder
  • Matching dark-green Tomorrowland pen with metallic decorative detailing
  • Space for keeping small travel memories and personal notes
  • Accompanying Global Journey postcards, as shown with surviving examples

Inside the journal

Opening the cover reveals a much warmer, vintage-inspired interior. The brown inner material contrasts with the deep green exterior and reinforces the impression of a traditional traveller's notebook.

The lined pages were intended to encourage Global Journey guests to document their experience. An introductory message explains the idea behind the journal: preserving the memories collected during the journey and recording the stories, adventures and people encountered along the way.

This makes the piece particularly representative of the philosophy behind Global Journey, Tomorrowland's official travel programme. Global Journey combines the festival with organised travel and accommodation, allowing visitors to travel to Belgium together by plane, train or bus and, depending on the package, stay at DreamVille or selected accommodation.

The journal therefore wasn't simply themed around travelling—the act of travelling to Tomorrowland was an integral part of why it existed.

Matching pen and globe charm

Two smaller details significantly add to the presentation. Attached to the journal is an antique-style metal globe charm, suspended from a brown cord. Shaped like a compass rose with the continents depicted in relief, it reinforces the international character of Global Journey and gives the journal the feeling of an explorer's personal notebook.

A matching dark-green pen completes the set. Its metallic decorative pattern includes Tomorrowland's Eye of Wisdom imagery, tying an otherwise practical accessory into the visual universe of the festival.

Postcards and preserving memories

The travel concept continues with the accompanying postcards. The examples shown feature photographic imagery on one side and a traditional postcard layout on the reverse, branded with the Global Journey globe emblem. They could be written and sent as souvenirs or simply kept inside the journal as physical reminders of the trip.

Together with the writing pages, this turns the journal into something that could evolve throughout the festival experience. Tickets, photographs, notes and other small souvenirs could be stored alongside handwritten memories, allowing every traveller to create a slightly different version of the object.
